There are not many teenage daughters who have trained for over a decade sometimes six hours a day and starting at 6 a.m.—in traditional Indian dance.Over the weekend, Vikas Kapoor, the chairman and chief operating officer of Mezocliq, and his wife, Jaishri, hosted a special evening at the Time Warner Center, complete with an afterparty on the fourth floor at the Parkview Lounge and a buffet dinner of Indian street food, including paneer tikka, goat biryani and vada sambar.

This was for their twin 15-year-olds, Riya and Sara, who were making their Rangapravesh, or their graduation, in the tradition of the Bharatanatyam form of South Indian dance. Their younger brother, Kavi, served as the evening’s master of ceremonies and Mr. Kapoor asked George Wein of the Newport Jazz Festival to come and give a blessing to the audience, which included Robert Battle of Alvin Ailey, Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehley and Mark and Jill Rachesky.“I can’t give a blessing,” Mr. Wein said after the two girls danced. “You should bless yourselves because you had the joy and the happiness and the privilege of being here tonight.”

“The girls really wanted to take it out of the community,” Mr. Kapoor said. “They love this and they love jazz. And they’re New Yorkers. It was very important that we integrated this into our lives as Americans as opposed to a repetition of an old tradition.”
