Indra Jatra has started from Friday. The festival, Indra Jatra is considered as one of the biggest festivals celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley. The festival begins after the long wooden pole is erected in front of Hanuman Dhoka in Basantapur. It is celebrated for eight days with singing, mask dancing and rejoicing. Indra Jatra festival falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadra as per the lunar calendar. It is celebrated in the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley and in Kavre and Dolakha also. According to the Hindu mythology, Indra is regarded as the Hindu God of rain, worshiped in this festival. It is marked by followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. The Government has also declared the public holiday in the Valley on Sunday to celebrate the festival. Indra Jatra festival is observed to celebrate the victory of the gods over the demons to release Jayanta, the son of Lord Indra.
